This qualification lets others in the electrical industry know that you have advanced knowledge in inspection and testing, making you an authority on the practical skills involved as well as the reports and certification.

Completion of this electrical course can also be used as evidence towards meeting the requirements for Qualified Supervisor (QS) status and Approved Electrician JIB grade.

Who is this course for

This qualification is for electricians holding relevant Level 3 electrotechnical qualifications who want to demonstrate CPD, take further electrical training, learn new skills and improve their understanding of inspection and testing.

What are the entry requirements?

To attend this course, you should be a practising electrician and hold one of the qualifications listed here. Please review the list carefully before making a booking.

What will you learn?

  • The legal responsibilities of an inspector.
  • The reasons for electrical inspection.
  • How to complete electrical certificates and reports , including Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificates (MEIWC), Electric Installation Certificates (EIC) and Electrical installation Condition Reports (EICR).
  • How to safely isolate single and three-phase low voltage supplies.
  • Practical inspection and the testing procedures.
  • Interpretation of test results.
  • Coding requirements for an EICR.

How is this course assessed?

This City & Guilds qualification assessment includes the following.

1. One practical assignment.Task A: Visual inspection.Task B: Combined initial verification and periodic inspection of an electrical installation.Task C: Short-answer questions.2. One online multiple-choice test.

What do you need to have with you?

  • A copy of BS 7671 - Requirements for Electrical Installations (latest revision).
  • A copy of IET Guidance Note 3: Inspection & Testing (latest revision).
  • A scientific calculator with square root function.
  • Calibrated test instruments.
  • Safe isolation kit (including a voltage indicator, proving unit, lock-off device, and warning labels).

You'll need photo ID on the day of the examination; please note failure to provide this will result in you not being able to sit the exam.
